How to Create a PowerPoint Presentation
This will give you a brief run through on how to create a PowerPoint presentation adding transitions and animation.
Introduction into Microsoft PowerPoint
Microsoft PowerPoint is a powerful tool to create professional looking presentations and
slide shows. PowerPoint allows you to construct presentations from scratch.
This tutorial will help you get started with Microsoft PowerPoint and may solve some of
your problems, but it is a very good idea to use the Help Files that come with Microsoft
PowerPoint.
Starting Microsoft PowerPoint
Two Ways
•
1. Click on the Microsoft PowerPoint icon on the dock.
2. Click on Macintosh HD --> Applications --> Microsoft Office 2004
--> Microsoft PowerPoint
Creating & Opening a Presentation
After you open up Microsoft PowerPoint, a screen pops up asking if you would like to
create a New Presentation or Open An Existing Presentation.
Blank Pres e n t a t i o n
•
Creates a new, blank presentation using the default settings for text and colors.
Click on Open
Opening An Existing Presentatio n
•
Select Open Other from the picture above. Locate you existing Presentation and
hit the Open button.

Create a Blank Presentation
After you select Open a window pops up that is the Title Slide.
Click in the boxes to add the
appropriate text.
Notice that the text will also show
on the left side in the worksheet.
Slide Manipulation
To make formatting easy, go to the View dropdown menu and select Formatting Palette.

This will placed the formatting tools on the side of your window for easy access.
Note: All of the following steps may be accomplished using the pull down menus, also.
Having the Formatting Palette visible is a shortcut.
If you wish to add a new slide, you can select the format
from the choices here.
You can choose to insert a graphic by selecting
the type of graphic from here.
It could be clip art, a photo from a file, a picture from a
scanner or camera and/or a movie clip.
You can select your fonts, size, and style here.
You can select backgrounds for your slides here.
You can even select a color scheme.

Different Views That PowerPoi n t Demonstrates
There are different views within Microsoft PowerPoint that allow you to look at your
presentation from different perspectives.
Adding Transitions to a Slide Show
You can add customized transitions to your slide show that will make it come alive and
become appealing to your audience. Follow these steps when adding Slide Transitions.
1. In slide or slide sorter view, select the slide or slides to which you want to add a
transition.
2. On the Slide Show menu at the top of
the screen, click Slide Transition.

3. In the Effect box, click the transition you want, and then select any other options
you want.
4. To apply the transition to
the selected slide, click Apply.
5. To apply the transition to
all the slides, click Apply to All.
6. If you want different transition for each slide repeat the process.
7. To view the transitions, on the Slide Show menu,
click Animation Preview.
Adding Animation to a Slide Show
You can add customized animation to your individual slides.
1. On the Slide Show menu at the top of
the screen, click Custom Animation.

2. From this screen you have many options.
a. Select what you want animated
b. Click Add Effect
c. Select an element on the slide and click on the up or down
arrow to change the order of animation.
d. You can preview your slide at any time.
e. Use the Effects Option to set up timing
Viewing The Slide Show
You can view your slide show by any of the following ways:
1. Click Slide Show at the lower left of the PowerPoint window.
2. On the Slide Show menu, click View Show.
3. On the View menu, click Slide Show.
4. Press F5 on the keyboard
Navigating While In Your Slide Show
Forward Navigation
•
o Simply click on the Mouse Button or hit the Enter Button on your
keyboard
Reverse Navigation
•
o Hit the Backspace on the keyboard
Exiting the show
•
o Hit the Esc Button on the keyboard
