Verify the serial number on the laptop matches the number on the laptop loan form.
This number will be needed if you use IBM tech support.
Show how to remove the battery.
Move lever and pull battery.
Show where the port replicator (docking platform) connects.
Do nothing that requires a screwdriver.
Show and describe ports on sides and back.
Power cord- yellow to yellow AC adapter into the wall.
Parallel printer port
USB ports - For connecting digital cameras, jump drives, certain printer and more.
S-video port- to connect TV or monitor.
Modem port - for dial-up connection (56K internal modem).
Ether net port - (blinking light) network connection at school or if you have a cable modem at home. (Don't try to jam phone cord into Ethernet port, you will bend the pins.
2 audio - 1 headphone and 1 microphone
1394 firewire port
lock slot - Kensington lock used to secure the laptop to a stationary object such as a table.
Vent - used to to cool the machine. Try not to block openings. Keep vent clean and free of dust
PCMCIA slot - to connect cell phones for web access or airport cards for machines that do not have internal wireless as these do.
Monitor LCD port
Combo drive - CDRW/DVD - pop tab and pull out drive to replace.
Front audio speakers.
Open machine and power up
Keyboard, touch pad and touch point. How to set pointing devices. Available through Access IBM.
Explain lights at bottom of screen.
Power button row. Access IBM, audio up and down, mute.
Run battery down to 10% BEFORE recharging.
How to maximize battery power; <Fn>F3=turns off monitor, <Fn>F4=turns off monitor and processor, <Fn>F7=Toggles screens, <Fn>F12=Hibernation (shuts laptop down and restart with power button bring you back to where you left. <Fn>Home and/or End brightens or darkens display. <Fn>Spacebar = magnifier, <Fn>PgUp Turns on keyboard light
How to save to the jump drive and how to eject.
Cleaning the screen and general care and feeding.
Not covered under warrantee: Accidental damage, spills on keyboard, leaving a pencil on the keyboard when you close cover.
