Image Creation How To.pdf
How to Create Disk Images...
Goal: Create disk images of widely used CDs so that they may be accessed over the network using a
program called CD Applauncher. We need to use Disk Utility to create the compressed disk images.
You should use G4 based machines if possible (for speed), and can probably get CD copies started on
six machines at once...
Logging into the CD account should start disk utility separately. Once in Disk Utility:
1 . Insert the CD
2 . Copy the CD name: Right (control) - click on the CD and choose “Copy CDNAME” . The disk
image has to have the EXACT same name as the mounted CD- we’ll paste this name when we
name the disk image.
3 . Choose the CD/Session to image: In Disk Utility, click on the Session tab on the side bar. On
some CDs none is available- pick what’s available- often the CD name. This depends on how the
CD was created. In our Kidspiration example shown, choosing Session 1 works, choosing the
Kidspiration™ choice fails when saving the image.
4. Click the New Image button when done.
5. Save the Disk Image to the CD Images folder on the Resources Sharepoint:
1. Click the disclosure triangle to see the full path (if it’s not showing)
2. Click CD Images in the sidebar to navigate to the folder (it’s a shortcut)
3. In the Save As textbox choose Edit-->Paste to paste the EXACT name of the CD.
4. Choose Compressed from the Image Format
5. Click Save when done.
Special Notes:
For multiple CD programs, first create a folder inside of CD Images, and name the folder something
related to the program (Example: Reader Rabbit CDs). Save all of the disk images for that program
within this folder-- (Note- the images MUST have the exact same name as the CD)
Sometimes the CD’s for different programs MAY have the same name. If this happens, for the CD’s
that repeat, create a folder inside of CD Images with the name of the program, and save the Disk Image
inside of this folder. DO NOT try naming the disk image differently than the CD Name.
If there is an Audio session in addition to the data/application session of the CD, you can try to create an
image for each session (treat as a multiple CD application above). This may or may not work depending
upon the application............
Please try to work with the most crucial CDs first to get them up and available
Also, Disk Utility MAY require authentication- the CD user should work.
