Featured Article

Dear Carnegie Learning Customer:

As the 2006-2007 school year comes to a close, I want to take this opportunity to share some of the highlights of our product development, partnerships, and research over the past 12 months. In the newsletter that follows, I hope you will find valuable information that will be useful as you continue to improve math education in your school or district.

One milestone, of which we are very proud, is this year’s release of an updated Geometry curriculum. While Carnegie Learning is well known for preparing students to succeed in Algebra, we know that achieving success in additional math courses is becoming critical to all students -- at-risk students in particular -- as the nation moves toward more rigorous graduation requirements in math.

Based on the same differentiated instruction as each of our Cognitive Tutor® solutions, Cognitive Tutor Geometry helps students to understand geometric concepts and build critical skills in spatial reasoning. As they progress from concrete to abstract thinking, students use algebraic connections and prior knowledge to practice inductive and deductive reasoning, which leads to mastery of core geometric concepts.

Please contact us at http://www.carnegielearning.com/geometryrocks if you would like to receive a sample of the Geometry textbook or for more detailed information about our expanded Geometry content.

In closing, I want to emphasize that Carnegie Learning continues to adhere to and advocate for rigorous standards in creating, executing, and evaluating research into the effectiveness of our curricula. We are committed to supporting evaluations that focus on research gathered from unbiased studies, and we are committed to applying the knowledge we gain to making our solutions richer and stronger each year.  We are very proud to be participating currently in a 5-year RAND Corporation study funded with a $6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education evaluating the effectiveness of Carnegie Learning’s curricula in six districts and regions across the United States. In addition, Carnegie Learning's math curricula was rated among the top three most effective Middle School and High School Mathematics solutions by The Best Evidence Encyclopedia, a free web resource created by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Data-Driven Reform in Education (CDDRE). You will find more information about this below.

Have an enjoyable summer. We look forward to working with you in the 2007-2008 school year.

Best regards,

Dennis Ciccone

“Because the feedback is instant, students are able to learn immediately from their mistakes, correct the problem, and continue-all on their own. It is very empowering for a student who has little confidence in his abilities to suddenly realize that he’s accomplished something all by himself and he actually understands!”

-- Amie Gallion, 6th Grade Math Teacher

“I like Carnegie because if I make a mistake it gives me a hint so I can keep working. Also, if I forget a vocabulary word I can look in the glossary and not have to ask my teacher all the time. It lets me keep working until I understand.”

-- Zac Ward, 6th Grade Math Student
