New Computers Being Deployed
The following story ran on the home page of the new BPS website annoucing the fact that thousands of new computers are being deployed in Phase II schools in the district.
The
Buffalo Public School District is making a massive investment in
technology for students and staff across the City. More than 4,000 new
teacher notebook computers, classroom computers, lab computers, library
computers, and laser printers are being installed in 13 “Phase II”
newly reconstructed schools across the B.P.S. Each school is being
trained in the use of the new technology.
“We wanted to work
towards creating a first class technology experience focused on
improving student achievement, increasing staff productivity, and to
provide for opportunities for formative assessment and data collection.
Additionally, through the use of laptop computers, the project provides
teachers increased opportunities to integrate technology effectively
into their instruction and in the lesson development process,” said
Buffalo Public Schools Supervisor of Instructional Technology Bill
Russo.
One of the goals of utilizing technology in classrooms is
to prepare children to possess the skills needed to succeed not only in
college but in the professional workforce, where a majority of tasks
are technology driven.
“Students entering college are currently
expected to know how to use technology to accomplish tasks like
writing, research, and even publishing. Students at the college or
university level are significantly handicapped without these basic
skills. Since Bennett’s motto is; ‘higher education is not just an
option but an expectation,’ we feel that Buffalo’s Phase II technology
initiative will work in harmony with our goals and help facilitate the
preparation of our students for higher education,” said Bennett High
School Principal Ramona Thomas Reynolds.
