This may seem to be over your head, (and probably mine too :-) but there may be IT folks in your district (or BOCES!) that should hear what Apple's up to here. Remember, Longhorn/Vista, as well as Novell's SUSIE are either variations of UNIX or very "UNIX like" in their core functionality. Having Open Source components as part of the OS is (in my opinion) a very promising direction for developers and users!

MacOSX, Open Source and the Future of Unix
Time: Dec 9th
Place: RIT
Though trained as a physicist, Dr. Ernest Prabhakar has been working with UNIX and Open Source software for twenty years. He started on BSD 4.2 at Project Athena while getting his S.B. in Physics at MIT, and used a NeXT Cube for his Ph.D. thesis in Experimental Particle Physics at Caltech. After a brief stint in management consulting with the Boston Consulting Group, he came to Apple in 1997 with the vision of combining the Power of Unix with the Simplicity of Macintosh. He was a key player in the first release of Mac OS X Server and Darwin, Apple’s Open Source operating system based on BSD technology. He is currently Darwin Product Manager on the Mac OS X team, where he is responsible for Open Source, UNIX Marketing, and Xgrid.
