Cross Platform File Sharing
   Printed March 5, 2005

Introduction
Teachers who received IBM Think Pads and currently have accounts on their
school’s Xserve, can access their home directories on the server from their
laptops.

Teachers can create a shortcut to their home directories on the Xserve and place
the shortcut on their laptop desktops.

This will allow them to:
1 . Access work stored in their home directories.

2 . Back up work from their laptops to the server

3 . Easily share information with their students through the Groups folder
even though the document was created on the IBM Think Pad.

Window Services must be running on the Xserve to allow
       cross platform file sharing.

If Window Services is not running, launch the service from
   Note  Server Admin.

Creating the Shortcut/Mapping a Drive
On the laptop, click on My Network Places

From the menu bar in the My Network Places window, choose Tools

From the Tools menu select Map Network Drive.

To Map the Drive, configure as shown below:

  • Accept the default Drive letter

  • In the Folder Field supply the name of your server, sharepoint name, and
   user name.

  • For all district schools, your server name is server1, the sharepoint is faculty
followed by the user name assigned by the school userXXX.

   Example: \\server1\faculty\user002

  • Make sure to check Reconnect at logon.

  • Click Connect using a different user name.

This will bring up a window for authentication. Type in the user name
(example user099) and the password that would be used to log on to an
   eMac in the lab.

The final step is to create a shortcut to the drive.

Drag the drive icon from the window address bar to the desktop.

Clicking on the short cut will bring up the user’s home directory with their
desktop, documents, movies, music, pictures, public and sites folders.
