How To Backup Up Your Files onto CD-R
on a Mac
It is important to keep a backup of all of your files in case something happens to the hard
drive upon which they reside. Luckily most computers have recordable CD drives which
make this easy.
There are two types of recordable CDs. CD-R can only be written to one time. They can
not be erased or re-recorded on. CD-RW’s can be erased and rewritten multiple times,
but are more expensive than CD-R discs. Since CD-R discs are so inexpensive it is
advisable to use these.
To backup files on a CD-R.
1. Put a blank CD-R into the CD-R drive.
2. Name the CD-R and click the OK button.
3. A CD-Icon shows up on the desktop. Double-click it to open its window.
4. Drag all of your files and folders onto the window (or CD-R icon). Make sure to get
your Documents folder and any files you have stored on any file servers.
5. Select the CD-R icon and choose File-->Burn Disc
6. Click the Burn button.
7. When the disc is completed it will appear on the desktop. Eject the disk (File--
>Eject). You know have a CD that will work for both Macintosh and Windows
computers.
Important Notes-
• Mount your network home directory first if you need to back up files from that. If you
are logged onto a regular workstation, it is already mounted for you.
• If you plan on using the disc on a Windows PC, you should have your files saved
using file extensions. For example, Word documents should end in .doc,
Appleworks documents should end in .cwk, Inspiration documents should end in .ins,
etc..
• Make sure you keep your disc in a safe place, with either a protective case or disc
slip. Do not store it in extreme temperatures. CD-R’s are more prone to damage
than a store-bought disc.
