Fix for FireFox Already Open

by Sharon Caher last modified Dec 09, 2008 12:36 PM

This is a common Firefox error that happens only in the Mac managed world. One sure fire way to fix the problem is to delete the user's home directory. Not the best method. Read on.

If you cannot open Firefox and see the error message Firefox is already open and–you know it isn't–try the following. It seems to work.

Go User's Home Directory:Library:

(Where is the User's Home Directory:Library? Under the Go menu at the top of the screen, select Home from the drop down menu. Find the Library. This is where you will be doing most of your work.)

  • Open the Application Support folder. If there is a Firefox folder there, throw it in the trash.

  • Locate the Library:Mozilla folder. Throw it in the trash.

  • Open the Library:Preferences folder. Find the following and trash:
    com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
    com.apple.mcx.manifests

  • Open the Library:Caches folder. Find the following and trash:
    Mozilla folder

On the Macintosh HD

There is a Mozilla folder in the Macintosh HD:Library

folder. I throw that out for good measure.
