Tandberg Video via Computers

by Scott Nourse last modified Oct 11, 2008 12:17 PM

There are a number of programs that can video conference with the district's Tandberg video conferencing machines, including Ophone, OPhoneX, and XMeeting

The Tandberg units are great tools for interschool collaboration, but what if you are in a location that is not near a Tandberg unit and would like to participate in a video conference with a Tandberg unit?

Luckily Tandberg supports a videoconference standard called H.323.  An open-source software project called OpenH323.org produces free software packages thatsupport this protocol and can interact with Tandberg- as long as you have a computer that meets the specs and have a video camera or webcam.

Windows programs are located at: http://www.openh323.org/code.html#windows (we suggest OhPhone)

Macintosh versions based on Openh323 are OhPhoneX and xMeeting (download links page). More information about these products are available at http://xmeeting.sourceforge.net/, though it may be blocked by the district filters. xMeeting currently does not support the proper video codecs to connect to the Tandberg units, but should in the near future.  A good OhPhoneX setup tutorial is available at http://ced.ncsu.edu/ltrc/studio/workshops/video/ohphonex.html.
