STOP 1: Register a personal name and password (registering will allow you to save and share your
searches)
Click the Register button.

On the Create New User Page, create a screen name. The name can be anything you like. However the name
can contain no spaces or special characters. (Example: scaher, greatteaching)

Each name must be unique. If your name is taken, a list of substitutes will be generated from which to choose.

When asked to enter your school’s name, select NY from the drop down menu. In the School Name field, type
PS followed by your school number and click Next. (Example: PS 3)

Ask your TIS or librarian for the generic login that has been created for student use in your school.

STOP 2: Searches (Keyword, Subject, Context, Theme Search)
Keyword Search: If you have a fair idea what you are looking for, running keyword search can be quicker than
drilling down through subjects and subtopics.

Choose an academic level and type your keyword or words in the Keyword field. Be as specific as possible.
Don’t worry, keywords are not case sensitive.

                            7

Click Go.

Subject Search: You can begin your subject search from either the Elementary or Secondary view of the
school subjects page and drill down to a list of subtopics. Choose a subtopic by clicking on the link and your
search is further refined. Continue until you have located a list of relevant websites.

Search taxonomy: Science > Space Science > Solar System >Saturn > Moons > relevant websites

Context Search: Context searches help you limit your keyword search. Drill down to a subtopic that most
closely matches the area of interest to you.

Go to the keyword search box and type in a phrase or descriptive word that closely matches what you are look-
ing for.

Check the box selecting “Search within this topic.” Click go.

Theme Search: Theme Searches are available only in the elementary view. They find web related resources
across curricular line.

To run a Theme Search, locate the Theme Search button at the bottom of the screen. Type a keyword or click
“browse our list of themes”

STOP 3: Creating, Accessing and Sharing Saved Searches

1. You have finished your search and located a number of sites on your topic. Locate the Save Search button
at the top of the page, just under the tabs. Click the Save Search button.

2.  On the next page that appears, you will have a chance to delete any websites that you might not want to
save. Click the check box next to the title then the Delete button. (You can only save 50 results.)

3. Give your search a name and click save.

4. To retrieve your search, click on Saved Searches in the Tools Palette.

5. To organize your searches, you can create a folder and move the search pages you have created to that
folder. The first step is to create a folder, name it and click Submit.

Next select the folder name from the drop down menu at the bottom of the list of your saved searches.

Check the searches you want to move to that folder. Click move.

6. You can share your saved searches with others in your school, The first step is to share a folder. (Folders
that have a star on them are shared folders.)

Next to each folder is a toggle link (Share)/(Unshare)

Click the link to share the contents of your folder
