GENERAL INFORMATION:
McGraw-Hill will be installing the McGraw-Hill Acuity Program in your school or district. In order for the Acuity
Program to be effective, all computers accessing the application must meet minimum requirements.

PC AUDIT INSTRUCTIONS:


A. Verifying the Windows Version:

Method 1:
From the Start menu, select Programs > Accessories > System
Tools > System Information. The version is listed in the OS
Name field.

Method 2:
Right click on My Computer and select Properties. The version is
listed under System on the default tab.

Acceptable versions: 98, 2000, NT, ME, and XP.


B. Verifying the Memory:

Method 1:
From the Start menu, select Programs > Accessories > System
Tools > System Information. The memory is listed as Total
Physical Memory.

Method 2:
Right click on My Computer and select Properties. The total
memory is listed under Computer on the default tab.

Acceptable values: greater than 128,000 KB or 128 MB.


C. Verifying the Processor Speed:

Method 1:
From the Start menu, select Programs > Accessories > System
Tools > System Information. The speed is listed at the end of the
Processor field.

Method 2:
Reboot the computer and watch the screen. The processor speed
should be listed as the computer boots.

Acceptable values: Pentium processor with speed greater then or
equal to 500 MHz.


D. Verifying the Screen Resolution:

Right click on the desktop wallpaper, and select Properties. Click
the Settings tab. The resolution is listed in the Screen Area box.

Acceptable values: 800x600 or greater.

E. Verifying the LAN Connection:

Method 1:
Select Run from Start menu. Enter command and click OK. In
the window type ipconfig and then hit the Enter key. This should
return an IP Address.

Method 2:
Right click on Network Neighborhood on the desktop and select
Properties. Right click on Local Area Connection and select
Properties. Highlight Internet Protocol and click Properties.
This should return an IP Address.

Acceptable values: Any IP address that does not start with 169.254.


F. Verifying the Browser Version:

Start Internet Explorer or Firefox. From the Help menu, select
About Internet Explorer.

Acceptable versions: Internet Explorer any version greater than 6.
Firefox any version greater than 1.2


G. Verifying Cookies:

Start Internet Explorer. From the Tools menu, select Internet
Options. Click on the Privacy tab. The slider bar displays the
cookie level.

Acceptable values: Medium or lower.

Start Firefox. From the Tools menu, select Options. Click on the
Privacy icon.

Acceptable values: Accept cookies from sites checked


H. Verifying AutoComplete:

Start Internet Explorer. From the Tools menu, select Internet
Options. Click on the Content tab then on AutoComplete.

Acceptable settings: Forms and Usernames must not be checked.

Start Firefox. From the Tools menu, select Options. Click on the
Privacy icon.

Acceptable values: Remember what I enter in forms and the search
bar must not be checked.

I. Verifying ActiveX:

Start Internet Explorer. From the Tools menu, select Internet
Options. Click on the Security tab. Highlight the Internet icon
and click the Custom Level button.

Acceptable settings: Enable Script ActiveX controls marked safe
for scripting and enable Run ActiveX controls and plugins.


J. Verifying Proxy Configuration:

Start Internet Explorer. From the Tools menu, select Internet
Options. On the Connections tab, click the LAN Settings button.
Make note of the proxy configuration.

Start Firefox. From the Tools menu, select Options. Click on the
Advanced icon. Click the Network tab. Click the Settings button

Comments: Some proxies perform very poorly under heavy load. It
may be necessary to add the IP address of the Acuity server to the
exclusion list or it may need to be bypassed.


K. Verifying Media Player for MP3 Files:

Start Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer). On the Tools
menu, select Folder Options. Click on the File Types tab. Scroll
down in the list and highlight the MP3 extension. In the details
section, check the Opens with application. Close this
window and exit Windows Explorer. Start the media player
application that is the default for MP3 files. Check the version.

Acceptable media players: Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, or
QuickTime.

MAC OS X AUDIT INSTRUCTIONS:


A. Verifying Macintosh Model:

Check the model designation on the front of the computer.

Acceptable models: eMacs, iMacs, and PowerPC G3 and up


B. Verifying Processor Speed:

Check the model designation on the front of the computer.

Acceptable models: eMacs and iMacs and PowerMacs with speed
greater than or equal to 500 MHz


C. Verifying Memory:

Check the model designation on the front of the computer.

Acceptable models: eMacs, iMacs, and PowerPC G3 and up

Acceptable values: 128MB or above


D. Verifying Virtual Memory:

Check the model designation on the front of the computer.

Acceptable models: eMacs, iMacs, and PowerPC G3 and up

Acceptable values: 128MB or above



E. Verifying the Screen Resolution:

From the Apple menu, select System Preferences. Click the
Displays icon.

Acceptable values: 800x600 or greater.


F. Verifying LAN Configuration:

From the Apple menu, select System Preferences. Click the
Network icon. On the Show drop-down menu, select Network
Status.

Acceptable values: Any IP address that does not start with 169.254.

G. Verifying Brower Version:

Start Safar or Firefox. Click the Safari or Firefox menu choose
About

Acceptable browsers: Safari 1.2 or Firefox version 5.1


H. Verifying Cookies in Safari:

Start Safari. On the Safari menu, select Preferences. Click on the
Security tab.

Acceptable settings: Always or Only from sites you navigate to is
selected.


Verifying Cookies in Firefox

Start Firefox. On the Firefox menu, select Preferences. Click
on the Privacy icon.

Acceptable setting: Accept cookies from sites checked


I. Verifying AutoComplete in Safari:

Start Safari. On the Safari menu, select Preferences. Click on the
Autofill tab.

Acceptable settings: User names and passwords is unchecked
and Other forms is unchecked.

Verifying AutoComplete in Firefox

Start Firefox. On the Firefox menu, select Preferences. Click on
the Privacy icon.

Acceptable settings: Remember what I enter in forms and the
search bar: Unchecked


J. Verifying Media Player in Safari:

Start Safari. On the Help menu, select Installed Plug-ins. Scroll
down to the QuickTime or RealPlayer plugin. Verify that audio/x-
mpeg3 with mp3 extension is listed.

Acceptable settings: audio/x-mpeg3 is listed for QuickTime or
RealPlayer.

Verifying Media Player in Firefox

Start Firefox. On the address bar type, about:plugins. Scrool
down to the QuickTime or RealPlayer plugin. Verify that audio/x-
mpeg3 with mp3 extension is listed.

Acceptable settings: audio/x-mpeg3 is listed for QuickTime or
RealPlayer.

Note*
Issues were identified in Quicktime 7.0.x versions with iTunes bundle using
Mac OS 10.4.x
