Writing Express Training Document

Step-by-step instructions on using the student and teacher components of Harcourt Trophies Writing Express software.
   Harcourt Trophies Writing Express Software Directions - Grades 1-6
For the teacher:
   1. Log on to computer as readingteacher and use harcourt as the password; select
     Reading Teacher group; open Harcourt Teacher Group folder; open
     Grade_TMS Teacher Apps folder.
   2. Double click Grade (level) TMS icon.
   3. Type password: teacher1
   4. Click Enter.
   5. Select Create Class/Group
   6. Type in your Class/Group Name.
   7. Click Enter.
   8. Click once on the name you created.
   9. Click Add Student.
   10. Type in a student name.
   11. Click Enter.
   12. Repeat steps 9-11 until all names have been added (names will alphabetize
     automatically).
   13. Click Quit.

For the Student:
   1. Log on to computer as readK (or read1, read2, read3, read4, read5, or read6
     depending on grade level) and use K (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 depending on grade
     level) as the password (If you get a message saying the user is unable to log on,
     Restart the computer and try again). Select Reading(grade) Group, click
     Continue.
   2. Click icon on the dock.
   3. Click once on Class.
   4. Click OK.
   5. Click once on the desired student name (they are alphabetical).
   6. Click OK.
Main Page: Journal, My Portfolio, topics
   7. Hold mouse over each building to see list of topics.
   8. Click once to select desired building.
   9. Hold mouse over activity to see what’s in each.
   10. Click once to select desired activity. Click Done.
   11. Each completed activity appears in My Portfolio. To view, click on My
     Portfolio. Click on an activity, then click Open.
   12. Students can keep a journal in Journal. There are text tools. Can record and play
     back words.

            - Rubric - one for each topic; can be printed
        • Gizmos - writing challenge with ideas using pictures; has Ideas, Before
              You Write, Writing Tools
        • Gadgets - writing challenge with ideas presented in words; has Ideas,
               Before You Write, Writing Tools
        • Writer’s Craft - writing activities; has Ideas, Before You Write, Writing
                  Tools
