How to Join the 802.1X Wireless Network (PC-XP)

AD Requirements:

With a BPS Intel based laptop. The laptop should be part of the Active Directory.
  • The Laptop should be in the AD Container = Mobile Computers
     o This is located under the School Organizational Unit:




The User should be a member of:
AD User Group = “Staff”  this is created and placed here when the user is initially setup by IT .

Procedure:

  1. The laptop should be hard-wired (Ethernet) into the network.
  2. Reboot, Login as the user.
  3. Enable the wireless access on the laptop,
   • A Group Policy from Active Directory should down load and configure the BPS Domain
     Certificate and services for you.

** Once the certificate is on the laptop, the laptop can then use the BPS Wireless Network.
To view the Certificate:
    • Start / Control Panel / Internet Properties – Content Tab
    • Click on Certificates: Look for: “BPSCERT”




  4. Reboot and login as user,
  5. Verify wireless connection.
     a. Place mouse pointer over wireless icon on bottom right of screen

The following is the details behind what the wireless group policy does.

BPS SSID Settings / Add an SSID called BPS




If you don’t have the wireless “tab” as displayed above: (also see appendix A)

1. You need to go to control panel then click administrative tools the click services then find Wireless
  Zero Configuration the on the left hand side press start the service then it will work

2.  Choose Authentication Type:
        Select WPA and TKIP




Click “OK”

Click on Authentication Tab
Select 802.1 x authentication – insert check mark

Change EAP type to PEAP

CHECK Authenticate as computer when computer information is available




Click “OK”

Click on EAP type “Properties Button”

Uncheck Validate Server Cert




Click on EAP-MSCHAP V2 “Configure Button”

Confirm MS-CHAP and Connection settings.
Verify Automatically is Checked - It should be checked by default




CLICK “OK”

Lastly: Click on Connection Tab:
Check “Connect when this network is in range”




Click “OK”

Appendix A:
Windows Wireless Services
& Windows is not your primary wireless management utility:

If windows is not managing your wireless network
the properties box will look like:




You will notice the “WIRELESS NETWORKS” tab is missing!!

This is because another utility is managing the authentication, security, link state, overhead
Or the service is inactive:

If you don’t have the wireless “tab” as displayed above:

1)Verify the service is active:

3. You need to go to control panel then click administrative tools the click services then find Wireless
  Zero Configuration the on the left hand side press start the service then it will work

2) Disable utilities managing the wireless connection:

This example is for DELL and the Dell Wireless Utility:




Right click
Open utility

De-Select:   Let this tool manager your wireless networks


Windows will automatically take control of the wireless network management.

To verify this:
Start / control panel / network connections / wireless – properties….
